Tokara Restaurant

We are proud to showcase chef Carolize Coetzees menu inspired by the South African countryside and farm produce. Carolize grew up in Humansdorp, a small town of some 30 000 residents located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. She recalls that some of her favourite memories are of meals spent laughing and telling stories around the kitche... n table, enjoying her mothers lovingly prepared food and heirloom recipes being passed on from one generation to another. My most cherished food memories involve emotional and physical sensations. Some of these are rooted in the expectation of reliving a fond memory, such as waiting for a cherished ingredient to be back in season, while other are more nostalgic, such as that morning slice of farm bread, heaped with my grandmothers homemade marmalade. The generosity of chefs whether professional or skilled lay cooks such as her grandmother and mother are a source of inspiration for Carolize that she infuses with her own food memories in designing refined plaaskos (farm cuisine) for the Tokara Restaurant menu. Within the first year of taking of the reigns of the Tokara Restaurant kitchen, Carolize won the Haute Performance Award as South Africas most promising chef in the 2020 JHP Gourmet Guide, while the restaurant has been included in the authoritative The Worlds 50 Best Restaurants new 50Best Discovery list for 2020. The restaurants lunch menu offers à la carte options and a four course set menu optionally paired with Tokara wines. Two set menus are available for dinner a seasonal four course set menu and Carolizes signature six course menu optionally paired with a flight of wines from iconic South African wine estates. The full range of Tokara wines are showcased on the list and are also available by the glass.
