Timiskaming Health Unit

FAIR START was established in Thunder Bay in 1996. The Lakehead District School Board invited local community partners and school boards to come together to help ensure that all children starting school had the opportunity to reach their full developmental potential. Since then, the FAIR START program has evolved as a community venture which we hav... e adopted here at Timiskaming Health Unit in the District of Temiskaming. As well as looking at healthy child development, the program helps link parents and caregivers with the many childrens services that are available within our community and helps promote school readiness. Research shows that over 75% of a child's brain develops after his/her birth, mostly within the first five years. These early years are critical in shaping a child's ability to think, love, trust, and to develop a strong and positive sense of themselves. The first five years have a profound impact on a child's emotional, social and intellectual development. Early identification means that we can catch potential problems before they have a chance to create larger problems, and, in some cases, we can actually prevent problems from developing. The Temiskaming Health Unit, in collaboration with our community partners, have worked hard to adopt the Fair Start Screening Program in our District.
