Thrift World is a for profit retail thrift store business that promotes recycling and re-use of used clothing, accessories, and other household goods in partnership with non-profit organizations. The company began operations in 1996 in Omaha, NE and now have four retail store locations in Omaha and one in Independence, MO. The company intend to grow the company's retail store presence while increasing awareness and support for the company's non-profit partners, diverting more waste, and creating more local jobs. According to the EPA, 13.1 million tons of textiles are trashed in the U.S. each year. The average person in the U.S. throws away approximately 70 pounds of clothing and textiles per year. While statistics show approximately 50% of this material could be re-used or recycled, only 15% or 2 million tons are recovered for re-use or recycling.
