The Shook Home, a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC), has been serving the elders of Greater Chambersburg since 1918. As a CCRC, the Shook Home provides Skilled Nursing, Personal Care, and Residential Living in a relaxed atmosphere located near retailers, eateries, physicians' offices and medical centers. Despite the array of services the... Shook Home offers, it continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the community. The Shook Home Board of Directors continually engages in strategic planning to ensure the facility is always positioned to optimally serve the community in which it operates. In an era of fiscal austerity, there has been a shift away from long-term custodial care to home-based care and services. As a result, the need for short-term rehabilitation services (e.g. Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Therapy) offered by post-acute care providers has increased. The goal of these services is to prepare individuals to return home after a hospital stay for acute illnesses, traumatic injuries, or elective surgeries. It is an invaluable service that fills the void in the continuum between acute care and home based care and services. In order to meet this increased need, the Shook Home is in the process of erecting a new Rehabilitation & Wellness Center on two recently acquired parcels of property contiguous with its campus. The front of the new building will face Burkhart Avenue. A covered drop off/pick up zone will be designated immediately off of Burkhart Avenue with client parking to the rear. The 12,000 square foot rehabilitation & wellness center will be three stories tall. Consequently, it will enable therapists to treat a higher volume of residents in an enhanced therapeutic environment.
