The RWC provides a dedicated community health service that looks after the health needs of PWID, leading onto the wider community. RWC's primary objective is to help reduce the spread of blood-borne viruses such as HIV, Hepatitis C & B amoungst the PWID population. Education around how to reduce the harms associated with injecting street drugs for... those who choose to use, and promotion of safer sex options. Blood borne viruses don't discriminate between drug users or non users, gay or straight, young or old, everyone who comes in contact with blood or blood products is at risk. It has been documented that Needle Exchanges do not cause an increase in drug use and save millions of dollars in health care costs each year. The RWC's service is based on a peer service model, which means you will find staff with empathy and understanding about all drug use issues. The RWC is based on a philosophy of harm reduction rather than abstinence to drug use. Throughout the world people now know that harm reduction is one of the greatest tools in preventing HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C & B from turning into a huge unmanageable problem. We at RWC have a strong commitment to the Treaty of Waitangi and place a great deal of importance upon this document in all that we do. We also support and use the Ottawa Charter in all our work.
