The Richland County Museum

Housed in a circa 1850 school house, the Museum displays a variety of artifacts from the 19th and 20th Centuries, illustrating the rich history of our area. Museum volunteers serve as docents during regular Museum hours, lead special tours for school and club groups, and take the Museum "on the road" to classrooms and meeting halls around Richland... County, and to events at Malabar Farm State Park. Volunteers also supply the necessary "behind-the-scenes" brain and muscle, designing and executing displays, conserving artifacts, and planning programs and events. Volunteers demonstrate scrub board techniques at Malabar Farm State Park's Heritage Days. The Museum is "kid friendly" with some touchable exhibits and activities available. The Museum is open to the public May through October, Sunday afternoons from 1:30 to 4:30, except for the following holidays: Mother's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. We are also closed during the Heritage Days Festival. However, if that doesn't work for you, organize a group and come for a guided tour! Scout groups, church groups, special interest groups, etc., have all enjoyed visiting the Museum. Admission to the Museum is free to all. However, we do welcome contributions. Stumped for a speaker for your next meeting? Many Museum associates are knowledgable in local history and willing to share that interest. Please call to arrange for a speaker. The Museum also has hosted small meetings. We can provide space for up to 40 participants and will serve a Victorian Tea, if arranged in advance. An elegant Victorian Tea is set in the Music Room. Cucumber sandwiches, cheese biscuits, fresh fruits, cream scones and shortbread are among the tasty nibbles, accompanied by pots and pots of tea! During the months of November through April, the Museum is open for special programs and events. Built in 1850, the new Lexington School was state-of-the-art for its time.
