The Refuge

The Refuge is a temporary emergency shelter program. It is designed to assist homeless individuals and families that reside in Lapeer County and who are ready, willing and able to transition out of homelessness. The Refuge is a non-profit faith based ministry operated by a board of directors and run by volunteers from area churches and individuals... throughout Lapeer County. Our program is structured, emphasizing support and accountability. The rules that are in place encourage a safe and healthy environment for all residents. In addition, our program requires abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The Refuge works with various agencies within the community to provide accurate and appropriate resources for our residents. Communication with other agencies not only assists our current residents, but allows for proper referrals for individuals wishing to enter into our program and likewise, when we refer residents out. Our program depends on volunteers.. Our volunteers assist in various ways such as meal preparation, supervision and mentor-ship. In 2000, Kendra Petty, MaryAnn Nutt and Father Steve Dewey of St. Matthew's Anglican Church had a meeting at Burger King to discuss how to provide shelter for the homeless in Lapeer. A Steering Committee was established and The Refuge opened the fall of 2002. The Refuge is a ministry driven by the calling of Jesus to serve our fellow man. The Refuge operates as an emergency shelter during the winter months. The Refuge has one of the largest volunteer bases and volunteer hours per year in Lapeer County.
