The Island School

The Island School offers transformative educational experiences in Eleuthera, The Bahamas. During the company's Semester and Summer Term, high school sophomores and juniors from around the world join the company's community to learn outside the walls of a classroom. With the campus and surrounding ocean as the company's laboratory and with help fro... m the company's colleagues at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, the company teach students how to live sustainably in the twenty-first century. All while earning high school credit. Together, the company engage in the process of inquiry in order to discover solutions to real world problems. Deep Creek Middle School (DCMS) is an independent school for Bahamian students in grades seven through nine located in South Eleuthera. The educational philosophy is similar to The Island School as it encourages students to connect with their local environment. Founded in 2001, with the goal of increasing access to alternative education methods, DCMS offers an experiential approach to the Bahamian curriculum. It is fully endorsed and recognized by the Bahamian Ministry of Education. Several middle school students have gained scholarships to attend boarding schools in the United States. Since opening in 2006, the Cape Eleuthera Institute (CEI) has served as the research and innovation branch of The Island School, working hand in hand with the organizations educational programs to chart a path toward a more liveable future. CEI aims to model and promote sustainable systems to help communities become more self-sufficient. The main areas of focus at the Institute are: alternative energy, sustainable food production (through permaculture and aquaculture), waste management, water resource management, biodiesel processing, green building, and marine resource management.Read More
