The Black Dog

A compulsory briefing will be held on the Friday evening prior to the ride. The ride will depart Townsville on the Saturday morning to cycle to the top of the Mingela range where we stop for lunch at the small town of Mingela before meandering along the rolling hills of the outback to Ravenswood. Cyclists travel at their nominated speed in a small... group supported by a group leader and two support vehicles. All meals and transport of camping and overnight gear is provided. Ravenswood is an old gold mining township and is a living tribute to the history and heritage of western Queensland. Mullock heaps, tall chimneys, poppet heads and discarded mine machinery pepper the countryside, reminiscent of the towns century-old glory. Beautifully restored hotels and public buildings will give you a glimpse of what the town was once like. An historic town that offers much more than you would expect. Riders will be able to camp or stay in one of the available hotels. That evening there will be light entertainment. On Sunday morning cyclist return to Townsville via the same route. The Townsville Central Rotary Club had the vision to target mental health issues and support healthier minds, bodies and communities through the Banish the Black Dog Charity Bike Ride. The inaugural ride was held in 2009 and received magnificent support with 85 riders. The number of riders has grown over the years and we have raised a substantial amount for the research of mental health issues and support for local mental health organisations.
