At Stepping Stones, we are equally committed to each student's social and emotional development. We believe a child's success in life depends on their social skills and emotional development just as much as academics. Students are continually guided on how to be respectful, towards each other, as their interactions are closely monitored in and outs... ide of class. Our teachers and staff also model for the student how we want children to communicate with each other. Our teachers do not yell or demean students for unacceptable behavior. The teachers and administrative staff are always firm but respectful, demonstrating to students that to get respect and cooperation from someone, you must give it first. At Stepping Stones, we strive to be a "punishment free" school, and believe that positive reinforcement is the best way to strengthen a child socially and emotionally and foster meaningful long-term behavior. Students still having difficulty are given choices to correct their behavior, ultimately defusing the situation and allowing the student to willingly choose to cooperate. Informal and formal incentives are used in each classroom to encourage cooperation and group teamwork, including Preferred Activity Times in which students earn extra privileges as a group for on-task behavior or helping one another.
