About Stem Gals
STEM Gals is designed to spread awareness of the gender and racial gaps in STEM fields and to encourage girls to change the face of STEM professions and pursue opportunities that close this gender gap. Women are significantly underrepresented in STEM professions. In the United States, women occupy about half of all jobs. However, they hold less than 25% of STEM occupations. While a myriad of STEM-related jobs is filled every year, the majority are occupied by men. From a young age, women are immensely discouraged from developing their ideas due to gender bias inculcated in childhood. According to the American Association of University Women (AAUW), negative stereotypes about girls capabilities in mathematics and science drastically lower their performance in math and science courses as well as their interest in pursuing STEM careers.
