Land-based combustion plants have used dry and semi-dry exhaust gas cleaning for decades, and Sodaflexx has finally brought this technology to marine applications. Sulphur is neutralised using sodium bicarbonate powder directly injected into the exhaust stack. The sodium bicarbonate reacts with the sulphur, creating sodium sulphate, a highly stable... and non-toxic salt compound. The sodium bicarbonate is introduced via multiple injection points to ensure the optimal reaction time. At normal engine loads the backpressure is negligible, so there is no need for expensive engine modifications. There is no scrubber tower, and with no sea water injection, there is no need for water piping or wash-water discharge. Sodium bicarbonate, otherwise known as baking soda, can be found in most major ports, and is inert at normal ambient and shipboard temperatures. Our system consists of a storage tank, a blower, a proprietary sodium bicarbonate injection system, a dust prevention system, and an optional particulate filter. The storage system is fitted to suit the individual ship, and can consist of a bespoke storage unit or pre-fabricated modular units. The Sodaflexx system utilises an exhaust gas monitoring system fully integrated with the engine control system to ensure optimal dosing of the absorbent for the most cost effective operation possible. The absorbent handling and dosing equipment design is based on decades of experience in dry powder handling, and ensures that the system is dosed optimally and safely for the required emissions zone. There are no special construction standards for handling sodium bicarbonate, so no high-alloy steel or unobtainium is required, and all non-proprietary components are off-the-shelf equipment.
