Smyth Law Office was founded in 1974 by David A. Smyth shortly after he graduated from the University of San Diego Law School. Prior to starting his own firm, David was doing criminal law and civil law work in the Los Angeles area. He decided that he would start his own firm out of a couple of open offices in his mother, Nora Smyths, medical placem... ent business, M.D. Placement Bureau. Originally located at Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue, Smyth Law Office began handling a variety of cases. The office was a general practice firm handling cases in Family Law, Criminal Law, Civil Litigation and Bankruptcy Law. A few years later, in 1977, Davids identical twin brother, Andrew E. Smyth joined the firm, and Smyth and Smyth was born. Prior to this, Andrew was working at the Riverside Public Defender practicing criminal law. During this time, Andrew gained valuable trial experience and also valuable experience with clients. In 1980, the number of bankruptcies in Los Angeles started to steadily increase. David and Andrew began taking more bankruptcy cases and soon found themselves concentrating on consumer bankruptcy law. As a result, bankruptcy law came to compromise 90% of the cases handled by Smyth Law Office. In 1981, David decided to move up north and start an office in Oakland, California. Smyth and Smyth Law Office now provides legal services in both Southern and Northern California. In 2007, Andrews oldest son, Stephen S. Smyth, joined Smyth Law Office after graduating from Whittier Law School in Santa Ana, California. Soon thereafter, in 2009, Andrews second son, William J. Smyth, joined Smyth Law Office after graduating from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, California.
