In 1880, showing great courage and enterprise for the time, Marianne Smith (nee Caughey) established her own drapers and millinery. With the vision of providing the early pioneers of Auckland and beyond with quality merchandise at good value and with impeccable service, Mariannes store went from strength to strength. On the back of such success and... the increasing prosperity of the business, Marianne was joined in 1881 by her husband and fellow draper William Henry Smith. The following year Mariannes brother Andrew Clarke Caughey was also invited by the couple to join them and in October 1882 a partnership and Smith & Caughey, Drapers and Clothiers was established. The dedication to ensuring a memorable customer experience, a sense of intimacy and the highest quality of goods on offer at Smith & Caugheys allowed the business to flourish and entrench itself among New Zealands premier shopping institutions.
