Shetland Broadband

Shetland Broadband has been involved in connecting remote communities for some time having installed and operated the Shetland Islands Councils three year trial for the Vidlin area and Fetlar. Shetland Broadband also installed and provide bandwidth to the West Burrafirth Broadband Company. This type of service can be an ideal solution for remote co... mmunities and those in locations that only have poor or no ADSL connections. Community groups can install fast broadband further enhanced by upload speeds greater than those offered by ADSL. Such groups may be able to obtain grants towards the capital cost of installation work and equipment from various sources the network then becomes their property when completed. Once installed they are then liable for ongoing bandwidth and maintenance costs. It should be noted that grants are only available to communities undertaking the installation themselves (Shetland Broadband are unable to obtain grant aid for a network that they own). Shetland Broadband will consider extending their own network to an area subject to there being enough guaranteed interest to make the scheme viable.
