Like most people in Taiwan during the post-war era, Sheng Kee Bakery's family started Sheng Kee as a way to survive. At first Sheng Kee Bakery opened a convenience store selling miscellaneous commodities, ice cream, and bread to Sheng Kee Bakery's local neighborhood. But as times changed, Sheng Kee Bakery had to adapt. Bread and pastries became Sheng Kee Bakery's specialty. Grandpa Kao would open up shop every morning, and Grandma Kao would close every evening. Through all the ups and the downs, they raised a family and did their best to provide them with all the opportunities that they themselves weren't afforded. When Sheng Kee Bakery's parents came to America, they brought along that tradition. Sheng Kee Bakery opened Sheng Kee Bakery's first bakery in America in 1981. Sheng Kee Bakery started on Irving Street in the Sunset District of San Francisco, a central gathering place for the Asian-American community in the Bay Area. Sheng Kee "" means to make a living. Like most first-generation immigrants, the hardships and joys Sheng Kee Bakery experienced brought Sheng Kee Bakery's community together and solidified the importance of keeping Sheng Kee Bakery's cultural traditions. Over the last 35+ years Sheng Kee Bakery has grown and have always remembered Sheng Kee Bakery's roots. Sheng Kee has built Sheng Kee Bakery's name on remembering those roots.
