About Sewage

NEW! Response to Dr. Don Gardner 7/5/16 letter to Mother Earth News. This attack on Lidia Epp's meticulously researched biosolids blogs lacks evidence, and is riddled with misinformation, distortion of facts, false allegations, and untruths. Gardner ignores the growing body of credible science and field reports warning that the current sludge regulations--CFR 40: Part 503 do not protect human health, agriculture or the environment. NEW! Written Testimony submitted to the PA House Democratic Policy Committee. In our oral testimony we urged legislators to prohibit land application on pastures where animals, especially dairy cows, graze. Cows excrete persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative sludge pollutants through lactation. Such a tightening of the state rules would protect the dairy industry two-fold: Healthier cows and less contaminated milk. Alternatives to Land Application. NEW! Activists Fight Biosolids Land-Application. Mother Earth Interview with Lidia Epp. Of the 7 million tons of sewage sludge currently being spread on US soil over half are stockpiled and surface-applied on grazing pastures and forage crops. A new study confirms what has been known for decades: meat and milk from animals that have grazed on pastures treated with biosolids affect female and male reproductive health and these effects can be transferred to humans. Yet EPA still permits surface application of sludge on grazing land. The current one month restriction to keep animals off the land after sludge has been spread is not protective for three reasons: one, ruminants ingest soil along with fodder, when sludge is applied they ingest sludge; ...Read More
