The SERVICOM Office has rated the services of the Kwali General Hospital in the Federal Capital Territory shameful after it found out that patients wait long hours to see a doctor and that the hospital does not attend to patients at night and on weekends. In the report of evaluation presented to the management yesterday, the Chief SERVICOM Officer,... Dr Christiana Famro, said it was surprising that the hospital does not attend to patients 24 hours as advertised. "The hospital does not offer services throughout advertised times as it does not attend to customers in the night and at weekends. Patients with critical cases resort to traveling far distances to other hospitals for treatment" she said. She said standards for waiting times for initial and subsequent visits have not been set by the hospital and patients are not aware of how long they need to wait before they are attended to. The report said, conveniences at the hospital were not maintained and were observed to be filthy, a situation, Dr Famro said was unbecoming of a hospital. She called on the management of the hospital to train its staff on customer care and complaints handing to improve their sensitivity to the needs of patients. She also encouraged them to implement the recommendations made in the report to enable the hospital improve its services to the people of the area. It was not all condemnation for Kwali Hospital as the report praised it for implementation of free antenatal services and the transparency in charges for services at the hospital. The Chairman of the hospital, Dr Adeola Joshua, who expressed his disappointment at the rating of the hospital, said the hospital offers services 24 hours including on weekends, however, he observed attention is given more to emergency due to paucity of staff and doctors.
