About Sea Resources

Sea Resources is a private, non-profit watershed learning center and Washington State's oldest fish hatchery. Where is Sea Resources? Sea Resources is located on river mile 4 of the Chinook River in Pacific County, Washington at the mouth of the Columbia River. Entering the Columbia from the Ocean, the Chinook is the first river on the north and flows into the Columbia through Baker Bay. What does Sea Resources do? Sea Resources provides a hands-on education program for students on the Long Beach Peninsula and the Lower Columbia-Pacific region and is restoring the Chinook Watershed in an effort to bring back healthy runs of coho, chum, and chinook salmon and steelhead and sea-run cutthroat trout. A watershed is an area of land surrounding and including a river that begins at the tops of the mountains, hills, or slopes bordering the river and ends at the river's mouth. Why do you need to restore the watershed in order to have healthy populations of salmon? Watersheds provide habitat (places and conditions in which something lives) for fish and wildlife who live there. The water that reaches the river where salmon and other aquatic life exist has traveled across the watershed before entering the river. The quality and quantity of water entering the river depends on the health of the watershed. If, for instance, the trees have been cleared from a section of land on a hill above a river, when rain falls on the bare soil it washes the soil down the hill and carries some of the sediment from the soil with it into the river.
