Scottrade Center is a contemporary 12-story glass and concrete arena located in downtown St. Louis that serves as the primary home of the St. Louis Blues Hockey Club and a premier regional venue for diverse entertainment and sporting events. Scottrade Center occupies the historic site of Kiel Auditorium, a 1932 municipal venue designed by prominent St. Louis architects Louis LaBeaume and Eugene S. Klein that served the community for six decades as a center for conventions, public meetings, expositions, sports events, and musical performances. Kiel Auditorium, officially named in 1943 in honor of former St. Louis Mayor Henry W. Kiela strong supporter of the arts who championed the original municipal auditorium concepthosted legendary performers including Elvis Presley, Bruce Springsteen, Duke Ellington, Judy Garland, and the Jackson Five, and served as the home court for the St. Louis Hawks professional basketball team and Saint Louis University Billikens basketball team. The development of Scottrade Center was catalyzed by the St. Louis business community's efforts in the mid-1980s to retain the St. Louis Blues hockey franchise when relocation was being contemplated.
