School for Young Children (non-profit organization and outreach program of the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Columbus) provides an early childhood program of excellence which supports social and emotional development through play in the context of deep, respectful relationships between teachers, children and families. Through play, the nat... ural way of learning at this age, and with the support of empathetic adults with a sound knowledge of child development, SYC will fulfill its vision by: Believing each individual (child, family member, and colleague) has inherent dignity and worth, and is unique. Viewing and respecting each child as a whole person, including social, emotional, physical, cognitive and language development. Nurturing the discovery of the world through large spans of uninterrupted, child-initiated engagement with the classrooms, outdoor spaces, and each other. Supporting children and families in setting healthy boundaries and in recognizing and expressing emotions in a healthy manner. Empowering parents and caregivers in the role of their childrens first and most important teachers as well as their advocates. Honoring families and the diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and traditions they bring to the community. Since 1985, NAEYC's national, voluntary accreditation system has set professional standards for early childhood education programs, and helped families identify high-quality programs for their young children.
