Rwanda Red Cross focuses on community resilience to disasters through preparation, risk reduction, response and recovery. Skilled disaster management volunteers have assisted at least 38,000 people affected by natural disasters. On Friday 20th December 2013 Rwanda Red Cross donated household items to victims of heavy rains that ravaged different pa... rts of the City. The organization donated non food items to 64 displaced families in Kimihurura Sector, Gasabo district. The items included mattresses, water jerry cans and beddings that cost about Rwf 2million. During handing over the materials, Charles Muvara, the coordinator of Rwanda Red Cross reiterated the organizations commitment to support people especially in times of disaster. "It is our responsibility to support and help you get back on your feet, we will work closely with other organs to rebuild you lives," he said. The rains razed houses and property living many families homeless. Ferdinand Rutikanga, a victim of the rains expressed appreciation to Rwanda Red Cross for its timely intervention. "We have been out the cold; all our property has been swept a way by the rains. We grateful to Rwanda Red Cross for giving us basic items to help us cope until a lasting solution is found," said Rutikanga. This is a core activity of Red Cross. Where there are disasters, Red Cross intervenes in not only supporting the victims but also rebuilding what was destroyed so that people's lives can be restored. The organization works closely with the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness and Refugees for proper coordination of relief efforts in times of disaster. The Rwanda Red Cross has trained response teams in all the thirty districts of Rwanda with similar teams being set at Sector level to effectively intervene when disaster strikes. The organization also has a national response team with specialized capacity to intervene in profound disaster situations.
