Sergio Michel spent five years writing and recording Tropical Depression. In the studio, fellow Floridian and drummer Rob Tucker, who also plays in former Metallica bassist Jason Newsteds Chophouse Band, was stationed behind the kit. Given the unfortunate fact that societys attention span seems to be getting shorter and shorter, releasing a 19-song... double album is not exactly a typical operating procedure. This is what makes Sergio Michel so special. He beats to his own drum and does things differently. Rock N Roll Industries had a special opportunity to sit down with Sergio and dive deeper into his recent album and what makes him tick. Prior to the COVID-19 lockdowns, Sergio Michel began 2020 on the road, opening for Soulfly and Toxic Holocaust across America. His unique and frenzied blend of rock, metal, and punk garnered coverage on: Concert Hopper, Next Mosh, Vice News, and Telemundo Nightly News. RNR: Weve been watching these past few months the evolution of your music from the debut of your current album, Tropical Depression. What is the key to keeping your writing process fresh and poignant? SERGIO: In the past, I kept lyrics sharp and concise to fit a theme I wanted to go with. In essence, each previous album was a concept crafted to make a specific point. Length and song count was irrelevant. It was great to make a point, but never showcased my full potential as a songwriter and never caught the raw energy of my live show because I was focusing on the premise of the whole work, other focusing on individual songs motif. With Tropical Depression on the other hand, I wrote from a place of observation and commentary of the contemporary world without a projected agenda. What wound up coming out was still a concept album, but reflecting the moral core of my beliefs and a real-time observation of current events through that lens.
