The family owned pizza shop was founded by Mario Caponi in 1962 when a large pepperoni pizza cost just $2.25. In those days, Rocco's menu offered only pizza with limited toppings, cheese,pepperoni, sausage, and mushrooms. Today, serving its third generation of customers, Rocco's Pizza offers a dozen toppings along with a full restaurant menu. "When I first started selling pizza," says Caponi, "75 percent of my customers didn't know what pizza was." While a student at The University of Akron, Caponi opened his first pizza shop in 1953 in Akron. "My father Rocco, who immigrated to America in 1920, owned a shoe repair store on Thornton Street," Caponi says. "We moved the shoe shop into the basement and opened Rocco's Pizza on the first floor.
