River Trading Company Ltd. is an Ohio-based coal marketing, trading, and terminal operations firm with deep roots in the energy sector dating back to 1886 through its parent company, Hatfield & Sons, Inc., which has operated continuously as one of the country's leading coal marketing and dock management enterprises. Founded in 1986 as a subsidiary... of Hatfield Terminals, Inc., River Trading Company began by buying and reselling coal to utilities and industries across the Upper Midwest, establishing itself as a reliable supplier in a competitive regional market. The company expanded its geographic footprint and service capabilities significantly through strategic infrastructure investments and operational agreements. In 1991, River Trading Company established River Services, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary tasked with managing and operating the upper harbor river terminal owned by the City of Minneapolis, thereby securing critical logistics infrastructure for its coal distribution network. Following Hatfield & Sons, Inc.'s acquisition of controlling interest in 1992, the company formed its Eastern Division to extend coal sales into Eastern and Southern markets, broadening its customer base beyond the Upper Midwest. To support its growing contract portfolio, River Trading Company entered into an agreement in 1993 to operate Blackhawk Terminal in Buffalo, Iowa, enabling the firm to administer over 400,000 net tons of coal annually under long-term contracts. Recognizing the need for greater operational control and efficiency, the company developed a coal handling facility on purchased property in Muscatine, Iowa, which became operational in early 2002 and subsequently replaced Blackhawk Terminal operations.
