Rede Energia is one of Brazil's leading private energy groups engaged in electricity distribution, trading and generation. The Company supplies electricity to approximately 34% of the Brazilian territory and serves 16 million people in 578 towns and municipalities across seven Brazilian states: São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Tocantins, Mato Gross... o, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Pará. With revenues exceeding R$6.1 billion Brazilian Reals, Rede Energia distributes approximately 16,000 gigawatt hours over 2,787,107 sqkm comprising its concession area. The company's distribution system boasts 317,389 km, 454 substations and investments of R$1.5 billion Brazilian Reals. At nearly 107 years old, Rede Energia's hallmark is its pioneering spirit. The first step towards this was taken in 1903, when Empresa Elétrica Bragantina S.A. was founded covering part of São Paulo and Minas Gerais states. Later, three electricity concessionaires were acquired covering São Paulo State countryside - the distribution company Energia Vale Paranapanema S.A in 1980, Companhia Nacional de Energia Elétrica in 1984, and Caiuá Distribuição de Energia S.A. in 1985. In 1995, Companhia Força e Luz do Oeste was acquired and presently serves one town in the state of Paraná. Rede Energia's pioneering spirit was also demonstrated at a privatization auction in 1989 when the Company bought Companhia de Energia Elétrica do Estado do Tocantins (Celtins) - the first state-owned electricity company to be privatized in Brazil. The privatization auction established that the winning company would be that with the largest investment plan for Tocantins State for the following ten years. The Group invested R$106 million Brazilian Reals in the region during the established period. The first step was thus taken for Rede Energia to actively participate in electricity privatizations that took place in Brazil during the 90's.
