RAPt provides drug and alcohol treatment programmes in prisons and in the community in England and Wales. We are delighted to have been awarded a grant of £9,490 by the Big Lottery Fund's Awards for All programme to set up a 'Jobs and Skills Club'. This will help former addicts, and people who have committed crime as a result of their addiction, in... to education, training and employment (ETE). The Club will involve setting up a small IT suite, based in a dedicated room at the Hull Alcohol Recovery Treatment (HART) centre (a day centre for recovering alcoholics and their families). Clients and former clients from The Bridges, RAPt's residential rehab unit for men based in Hull will also benefit from this new service. Many clients from The Bridges settle locally in the area which has led to a growing, vibrant recovery community. The suite will be used to deliver a rolling programme of workshops on education, training and employment, co-ordinated by our ETE Worker, which will also be available to clients and former clients for 'drop-in' use. Research indicates that employment is one of the most important factors in helping to reduce re-offending, but over half of all prisoners lack the skills required by 96% of jobs (Bromley Briefings, Prison Factfile). Many of the people with whom we work have been described as a 'core jobless group', overlooked by 60% of employers on release. The vast majority of our clients face multiple challenges in the workplace; this project will truly make a difference, helping men and women in Hull in recovery from addiction to build a crime and drug free future.
