Pura Vida Bracelets was born when friends Griffin Thall and Paul Goodman crossed paths with two talented bracelet artisans, Jorge and Joaquin, while on a post-grad surf trip to Costa Rica in 2010. Jorge and Joaquin made colorful, handmade bracelets that seemed to capture the essence of the " pura vida " lifestyle, which means "pure life" in Spanish... and is a philosophy that encourages the appreciation of life's simple treasures. In an effort to help the artisans and bring a piece of Costa Rica back stateside, Griffin and Paul bought 400 bracelets to sell at home in San Diego. They sold out in a matter of days and the rest is history. Today, over 800 artisans in Costa Rica, El Salvador, and India can depend on a steady income and positive working environments, thanks to the support of Pura Vida 's community. Since 2010, the brand has partnered with over 175 charities around the world as a part of their ongoing charity collection and has donated more than $1.9 million to environmental, health and humanitarian causes. During the summer of 2019, Vera Bradley acquired a 75% majority stake in Pura Vida Bracelets for $130M.
