The most recent government statistics on poverty show that in 2015: 43.1 million people (13.5 percent) were in poverty, including 14.5 million (20 percent) children under the age of 18. 42.2 million Americans lived in food-insecure households, including more than 13 million children. There is 20% food insecurity in Brooklyn and 18.6% in Newark, NJ.... Two of the root causes of hunger and poverty in America are unemployment and low-wage work. With the addition of the two new sites Prosper is adding to Bread and Lifes existing Mobile Soup Kitchen route , the MSK will serve 12 sites, providing an additional 24,000 meals to hungry New Yorkers, for a total of over 123,000 meals served annually. Additionally, Prosper will expand the Digital Choice Food Pantry, which distributes uncooked meals to those who need food, using a point system based on family size. We believe that the way to reduce poverty and increase economic mobility is by creating educational and job training programs that help people find work and earn a living wage.
