Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition

It is with much sadness that we announce the closing of the Prior Learning Centre effective March 31st, 2015. Prior Learning Centre - formerly the PLA Centre - was established in 1996 as a collaborative, community-based, non-profit organization providing prior learning assessment and recognition programs and services. For nineteen years we've had t... he privilege of helping individuals in Nova Scotia and across Canada identify and recognize their own skills and learning - gained through life and work experience as well as through formal education and training programs - and use that information to secure employment, access further education and training and contribute more fully to their communities. The only organization of its kind in Canada, Prior Learning Centre is a recognized leader in the provision of high quality PLAR programs and services. The Centre has contributed to the most up-to-date body of knowledge on PLAR in Canada and played an important role in the development and implementation of a PLAR framework and strategy in Nova Scotia. We have provided services in research, skills and learning portfolio development, PLAR practitioner certification, training, customized PLAR processes for organizations, and assistance for those looking to present a PLAR challenge (e.g. for advanced standing or admission) to an academic institution. The Centre's early adoption of a capacity-building model led us to train over 400 practitioners throughout Nova Scotia and in a number of communities across Canada, and has allowed us to provide quality-assured programs and services to thousands of individuals. Throughout its lifetime, the Centre has relied on the investment and commitment of like-minded partners.
