Pollen Initiative

Pollen Initiative is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating media centers inside prisons and jails across the United States. Formerly known as Friends of San Quentin News, the organization rebranded in September 2023 to reflect its national expansion and broader mission to equip incarcerated people with multimedia skills, including writt... en, audio, and visual journalism, to share stories that change lives, inform policy, and build communities. The organization serves as the affiliated nonprofit fundraising organization of San Quentin News, the award-winning incarcerated-run newspaper at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center, which reports on rehabilitative efforts to increase public safety and achieve social justice. Pollen Initiative operates the San Quentin Media Center as its flagship model and has expanded to establish the first media center in a women's prison at Central California Women's Facility, where residents produce the CCWF Paper Trail. The organization supports ForwardThis Productions, a film training program that teaches incarcerated participants the fundamentals of filmmaking and provides the only platform in the country offering incarcerated film crews their own content creation opportunities. In partnership with Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Pollen Initiative relaunched the historic American Penal Press Contest in 2024, which originally ran from 1965 to 1991 and was known as the Pulitzer Prize behind bars.
