PLOT is a mentoring program for at-risk youth between the ages of nine and twenty-one living in Brooklyn, New York. Many of our mentees were involved, or are at risk of becoming involved, in the juvenile or criminal justice system. PLOT distinguishes itself from other mentorship organizations by choosing mentors from the community with similar life... experiences to PLOT's mentees. PLOT's mentors understand that a positive role model can maximize a youth's potential for success. PLOT recognizes the capacity of all youth to create positive change in their lives and within their communities. PLOT builds multi-layered, nurturing support to help youth reach their full potential. PLOT seeks male mentors for its January 2015 training class to provide comprehensive one-to-one and group mentoring to Brooklyn youth who are at risk of entering the juvenile justice system. Youth involved in the juvenile justice system in New York City have poor educational and employment outcomes, are likely to be exposed to violence, and have high rates of recidivism. According to the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention studies show that mentoring benefits youth's emotional/psychological well being, peer relationships, academic studies, and grades. By establishing a positive relationship with a mentor, youth can redefine their path, realize their potential and educational goals, and become tomorrow's leaders.
