The following is taken from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services website: We value what is important to people with disabilities and their families, who are striving for an everyday life. An everyday life is about opportunities, relationships, rights, and responsibilities. It is about being a member of the community, having a valued role,... making a contribution to society, and having one's rights as a citizen fully respected. It is a vision that we should all be working toward together. People with disabilities have a right to an everyday life; a life that is no different than that of all other citizens. This continues to be the truest statement on which we can build our work. "Everyday Lives" will be a guide to the Office of Developmental Programs as it develops policy and designs programs. Providers of services will use these recommendations to support individuals and their families to achieve an everyday life. A Federally-approved 1915(c) waiver program designed to help individuals with intellectual disabilities age 3 and older to live more independently in their homes and communities. Interdependence: We all need the support of others in one way or another, unless we live on an island. If we live and work in society the inescapable truth is that whatever actions we take or dont take, have consequences for other people. Compassion: seeing people as human first, beyond the limits of mental labels. We support people who face daily challenges by being part of their support network so that they may fully participate in the human experience. We provide a helping hand by empowering their freedom to choose, to act as individuals and to experience everyday life. Life presents us all with challenges. However, those challenges should not define who we are.
