Peace through Play

Peace through Play is 140 member student-run organization founded and based at Northeastern University. We promote a culture of peace through students empowering students. Our volunteers partner with six local schools in the Roxbury, Dorchester, and Cambridge communities to support the Kindergarten through 8th grade children with recess and after-s... chool programming. In the fall, volunteers use crafts and games to explore themes such as self awareness, advocacy, and empowerment. In the spring, we challenge the students to put these ideas into action through student led community service efforts, or "Peacemaker Projects"! Our volunteers wholeheartedly believe in the power of play. Many studies have found play to have a wide variety of crucial benefits for young children; it is crucial to a child's social, cognitive and physical development. Unfortunately, recess and playtime are being increasingly eliminated from the typical elementary school schedule, contrary to the striking research in favor of play. For example, a four year study found that schools with a third of their day dedicated to formal and informal physical education, art, and music actually showed improved test scores. Thus, not only does play decrease risk of depression and anxiety, foster cooperation and problem solving, and build confidence, it also supports school performance!
