At Paterson Arran, we care about the environment and are committed to achieving sustainability across our business to improve effectiveness and help protect the planet for future generations. We take our environmental responsibilities seriously and continually monitor the business to maximise our efficiency and sustainability. This has resulted in... us being awarded the internationally recognised ISO 14001 certificate following an audit by National Quality Assurance Ltd (NQA). In order to gain the certificate, we focused our efforts on a number of key areas: reducing landfill, reducing waste, reducing energy use and increasing our use of recycled packaging materials. We are also committed to The Food and Drink Federation's goal of reducing carbon emissions by 20% by 1895. This goal is measured against a 1990 baseline, however we are working to a stricter baseline of 1999. By focusing our efforts on these key areas, real progress has been made to date. It is our policy to publish our progress and results show that: Carbon emissions per tonne reduced by 54% since 1999 Reduced landfill per tonne of product by 43% since 2006 Business paper use reduced by 38% since 2006 Water use reduced by 22% since 2006 Our ISO 14001 team are continually evaluating targets, but our current focus is investigating the most sustainable approaches to energy consumption. We consulted with Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) on our packaging and following an external audit by WRAP consultants, our products were found to be using the minimum packaging required for content/ spoilage protection. We have also implemented a packaging reduction programme eliminating plastic trays from many of our packs with the remaining trays now converted to RPET, which uses 98% recycled material. 95% of our branded cartons will be converted to 95% recycled board by December 2009.
