Pacific Bamboo Resources (PBR) cultivates economic activities that restore the health of our natural and built environments and, in turn, create resilient, sustainable communities across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. Not solely a bamboo venture, PBR programs reflect efforts of creative, practical social work for rewarding social change: we aim... to reach rural communities and with them design robust sustainable agriculture and agroforestry guilds to restore landscapes, improve carbon stocking, produce foods and valuable perennial resources, and create new employment paths; we look for urban "greyfields" (or abandoned properties) and aim to collaboratively redesign them in support of community food systems, cottage industries, and places to meet and re-connect; we seek to engage un/under-employed citizens in educational programs to connect their skills, interests and aspirations to emerging "green job" fields and sustainable development opportunities; we try to support interdisciplinary academics and student learning via our Sustainability Internship program; we explore and share ideas for creating innovative products and services to support local sustainable community development. In 2009, the Buckminster Fuller Institute announced that PBR was among thirty-three outstanding international finalists for the prestigious Buckminster Fuller Challenge, an award for distinctive and timely design proposals for social, economic and environmental change and sustainability.
