OXYGYM was created in 1999 by Mr. Richard Markx, a Registered Respiratory Therapist since 1979. Mr. Markx's extensive experience in treating patients with pulmonary disease inspired him to establish the premier outpatient pulmonary rehabilitation facilities in the New York metropolitan area. The American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society recently adopted the following definition of pulmonary rehabilitation: Pulmonary Rehabilitation is an evidenced-based, multidisciplinary, and comprehensive intervention for patients with chronic respiratory diseases who are symptomatic and often have decreased daily activities.
