Outrun the Rays

Families and friends of those effected by melanoma, coming together to Outrun the Rays is a non-profit organization promoting "Rays Awareness" to increase education and awareness of melanoma and melanoma prevention. Outrun the Rays was formed in 2010 by the friends, families and individuals who have been effected by melanoma - some who have fought... and won the battle, some in support of someone who have lost their battle, and others who are still fighting this awful disease. Our mission is to educate the public about the dangers of melanoma, the benefits of prevention and early detection, and practicing general sun safety. Melanoma is a type of skin cancer that develops when the cells that give the skin its tan or brown color begin to grow out of control. Melanoma is much less common than other types of skin cancer, but is more dangerous. If not caught and treated early, melanoma is much more likely to spread to other organs of the body. In the past decade (2010-2020), the number of new invasive melanoma cases diagnosed annually increased by 47% according to the American Cancer Society. In our nine years, we have raised about $225,000 through fundraising efforts and generous donations by our sponsors. All funds raised are used to support our melanoma awareness and education efforts, including providing grants to organizations implementing sun-safety measures, providing free sunscreen to 3,000+ athletes each summer and "Ban the Tan" programming for local high schools during prom season. We look very forward to continuing our efforts for years to come!
