Our City

Our City is working to actively change the political dynamic in San Francisco. We have reached a key turning point for making this happen. Power has been shifting strongly away from a handful of individuals and big downtown businesses that used to wield excessive influence over local decision making. We are organizing to continue shifting that powe... r into the hands of the people and local neighborhoods. In the year 2004, with the return of district elections, San Franciscans voted into office a progressive majority on the Board of Supervisors. In 2003, Matt Gonzalezs Green Party mayoral bid, which nearly succeeded against a powerful Downtown machine, further energized local elections and launched a new political movement in the city. Organizers from the Gonzalez for Mayor campaign founded Our City in 2004 as part of that new movement. From 2004 to 2020, voters have consistently returned a progressive majority to the Board, despite Downtowns massively funded efforts to re-entrench corporate and developer control of City government. The Board has passed pivotal legislation each year to protect and revitalize San Francisco, and take it back from the 1%. Step by step, grassroots action is transforming the city we love into one we can be even more proud of. , and beyond, always faces new challenges from forces which prefer greed and self interest over the public and environmental good. Maintaining a progressive city takes the ongoing hard work of year-round organizing with fellow San Franciscans, to build a citywide network of residents and activists who know what's at stake, and join together to make a difference in both , and the greater world.
