About Okell’s Brewery
Okells Brewery is a regional brewery based in Douglas, Isle of Man, founded in 1850 by Dr. William Okell, a Cheshire surgeon. Established originally at Castle Hill and later at Falcon Cliff, the brewery now operates from a purpose-built modern facility at Kewaigue on the outskirts of Douglas, where it relocated in 1994. Dr. Okell was instrumental in convincing Tynwald, the Isle of Man's parliament, to pass the Manx Pure Beer Act in 1874, which ensures that all beer brewed on the island is made using only natural ingredients, including water, yeast, hops, and malt. This purity law remains in effect today and defines the brewery's commitment to quality. Following Dr. Okell's death in 1892, the brewery was taken over by his son William, and in 1946 it became part of Heron and Brearley, a local wine and spirits merchant.Explore more
