Ocala Veterinary Endocrine Lab now performs the vast majority of animal hormone testing for the Central Florida region and is state licensed for radiological certification of RIA testing. OVEL was founded by Martha "Marty" Johnson an endocrinologist, who received her masters degree in Physiology from Purdue University's School of Veterinary Medicin... e. Marty worked for Parke Davis Pharmaceutical Company for seven years acquiring in-depth experience evaluating the effects of drugs on animals. Marty returned to Purdue in 1973 where she served as the Director of the University's Veterinary Hormone Lab. Over the next 22 years, she garnered extensive experience in animal hormone testing and management, achieving expert status in these and related areas. In 1995, Marty and her husband, Carl, moved from Indiana to Ocala, Florida and she accepted a position with the University of Florida. At UF she served as Senior Technologist for Dr. Patrick Colahan in the Large Animal Clinic at the School of Veterinary Medicine. While much of OVEL's work is equine related, they also perform numerous hormone tests for dog breeders. Interestingly, they also conduct progesterone testing to predict day of calving for the Ringling Brothers Center for Elephant Conservation. This is done to optimize the birth safety of the calves.
