NsGene was founded in December 1999 as a spin-off from the Danish biopharmaceutical company, NeuroSearch A/S, to develop novel cell and gene based products for the treatment of neurological diseases. Based on Neublastin's neuroprotective effects on peripheral neurons, NsGene entered into a license and collaboration agreement with Biogen Idec, who is developing Neublastin as an injectable protein product for the treatment of neuropathic pain. NsGene has through its discovery effort identified and patented several new neurotrophic factors that are currently undergoing further characterisation. Through the exploratory work by NsGene and its academic partners in Lund with Neublastin and other therapeutic factors it has become clear that local delivery of neurotrophic factors secreted from cells placed within a brain region can promote both the survival and regeneration of the diseased neurons. The local cell based delivery of a neurotrophic factor has thus formed a clear product concept for NsGene. Focus is placed on the Encapsulated Cell Technology (ECT) biodelivery system, which was in-licensed from Neurotech S.A. in 2000. This platform combines local cell based delivery with the necessary safety and manufactoring characteristics for product development.
