Neuroscience Institute

The Neuroscience Institute is the largest institute at Dalhousie, comprising 97 members (see Appendix 1 for a list of members who paid dues for 1998-99), who represent the neuroscience community at Dalhousie and, through the Halifax Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience, all neuroscientists in Halifax, the largest community of neuroscientists eas... t of Montreal. The Institute co-ordinates neuroscience activities on the Dalhousie campus and provides a venue for neuroscientists to meet, exchange information and develop collaborative research projects. Our members work in the Life Sciences Centre, the Tupper Building, DalTech and the local hospitals; thus, a central organizational structure is essential for campus-wide communication. To this end, the Institute organizes lectures, workshops, and general meetings. It also maintains an e-mail network (Neuro-List and Neuro-Fact) and a Neuroscience home page on the WWW (http://www.neuroscience.dal.ca). Both of these networks are important mechanisms for communication among neuroscientists in Halifax and beyond, as well as an advertisement for recruiting students. The Institute was very active in 1998-99, organizing many exciting events. These included the annual Poster Day, a workshop on Neurochemistry, Brain Awareness Week presentations, the Annual Dinner and Grass Lecture. A complete list of the Neuroscience events for 1998-99 is found in Appendix 2. An important initiative this year has been to develop further collaborations between basic and clinical neuroscientists and, with the amalgamation of Universities, to involve our colleagues in engineering and computer from DalTech, in the Neuroscience Institute. To this end, Science/Institute meetings were held at DalTech, in the Division of Neurology (QEII, Infirmary Site) and Department of Psychiatry (QEII, Camp Hill Site).
