Lithuania is a convenient transit route, linking Western Europe with the markets of CIS, China and other Asian countries, because both types of railway track are already available in its territory: the European standard (1345 mm) gauge and the Russian standard (1520 mm) gauge. The implemented part of Rail Baltica project back in 2016 made Lithuanian railway infrastructure an integral part of the North Sea Baltic Sea Railway Freight Corridor (EU Transport Corridor No. 8) to the Western European ports of North Sea.
