The foundations of the Marimed Group were laid in 1970 by a devoted team of hard working and experienced captains who had the vision of forming a modern and diversified entity, providing a wide spectrum of services to the shipping industry. Initially involved in technical management of tanker tonnage, Marimed and its affiliate companies, are today... a shipping group involved in large range of the worldwide dry cargo shipping industry (bulk & break bulk) . From its inception, Marimed was entrusted with the technical and commercial management of four tankers of 30,000 to 97,000 tons DWT on a 5-year contract. In 1973, Marimed signed a 4 year contract for the management of four additional tankers ranging from 44,000 to 285,000 dwt. The Group expanded during the 1970's to encompass all aspects of shipping including ship-owning and commercial operations. At its peak, in the early 1980's, the Group owned, in full or in partnership, a fleet of 25 vessels with a total dwt tonnage of 268,896. The early 1980's saw the Group begin its involvement in break-bulk and semi-liner cargo operations on various trade routes, operating and chartering its own controlled fleet as well chartering additional tonnage necessary to service its clients. In 1984, Marimed inaugurated a break-bulk service between South Africa and the Mediterranean Sea. The service has been in operation ever since. The line was based from the beginning on owned tonnage as well as chartered vessels. The core cargoes included granite, steel and forest products. The development of the service was gradual, and sound. Spot shippers turned into regular customers and yearly commitments followed. By the end of the 1990's Marimed's long term success led to its competitive positioning on its major routes of operation.
