About Mariam Aziza Stephan
Mariam Aziza Stephan (b.1972) is a first generation Afghan- German American painter working with the shapes and motifs of landscape as a means of visualizing the scars of displacement, migration, loss, exploitation and no-go zones. "Before it can be repose for the senses, landscape is the work of the mind. Its scenery is built up as much from the strata of memory as from the layers of rock." She has received awards including the 2018 North Carolina Arts Council Fellowship Award and a 2010-11 Fulbright Scholar to Egypt, and currently serves as Professor of Painting at UNC Greensboro.
