Founded in 1858, Ludowici is proud of its long history that began in Sydney, when John Charles Ludowici established a small tanning operation at Burns Bay, 70 years after the arrival of the First Fleet. The 1850s were the gold rush years, a period of rapid expansion in population and economic activity in young Australia. It was a decade of signific... ant political events: the Eureka Stockade; the establishment of a bicameral parliament in New South Wales and extension of parliamentary candidature to non-property owners; South Australia and Queensland became self-governing states: and Van Diemen's Land became Tasmania. Businesses too were flourishing with icons such as Cobb & Co founded in 1854, and Ludowici and Tyrrell's Wines in 1858. It was an excellent time for an energetic young immigrant with special skills to start and build a business. Ludowici and Company was originally established as a partnership between Ludowici and Peter Russell, a central figure in early Sydney engineering history, but was short-lived, dissolving in 1860. From these beginnings and with tanning a vital industry in the day to day life of the young colony of New South Wales, the business prospered, listing 30 years later on the Stock Exchange as J.C. Ludowici & Son Limited in 1911. The Company became well known throughout Australia and the world for its 'Pioneer' leather belting and other products. However, the advent of electricity compelled Ludowici to diversify into the manufacture and merchandising of engineering hardware. In the 1960s, the Company completely shut down its tanning business to focus on what it called 'engineering flexibles', reflecting a core business that would adapt to new developments in rubber and plastics.
