Lezlie Silverstein

Lezlie Silverstein is a teaching artist from Houston, Texas who has earned her BFA in Photography and Sculpture from Washington University in St. Louis and an MFA in Sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art and is a 2006 graduate of the St. Louis Regional Art Commission's Community Arts Training Institute (CAT). The CAT Institute is an innovative pr... ogram in St. Louis centered on the belief that art has the power to be an agent for social change and that art can engage the voices of those who may not be heard. Having over 15 years of experience in arts education, Silverstien remains passionate and enthusiastic about teaching art, curriculum development, and art. In 2015 Silverstien moved to Baltimore and entered the Master of Fine Arts in Community Arts (MFACA) program of Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA). As an MFACA candidate, simultaneously serving as an AmeriCorps member, she is the 2015-2016 Artist-in-Residence of Augusta Fells Savage Institute of Visual Arts (AFSIVA) high school in West Baltimore. At AFSIVA Silverstien created an afterschool program called the SPACEmakers, where 15 young artists work together to transform public interior and exterior spaces at their school. One of the SPACEmakers projects is a sanctioned graffiti space in the schools courtyard. Her vision for the space includes promotion of safe practices while encouraging big ideas. From 2004-2009 Silverstein served as Artist-in-Residence teaching Craft Alliances Mural Arts Program (MAP). During that time, she and her students created and installed over 20 ceramic tile murals throughout the city of St. Louis. In 2010, after moving back to Houston, Silverstien gained valuable training and experience working as a Discovery Guide for the Childrens Museum of Houston. Discovery Guide teams are trusted to be the face of the CMH mission, Transforming communities through innovative, child-centered play.
