Lee County Mosquito Control District is an independent public health agency established in 1958 by the Florida Legislature to provide comprehensive mosquito control services across Lee County, Florida. Lee County's extensive salt marshes and wetlands represent some of the most prolific mosquito breeding environments globally, requiring sophisticated and continuous management strategies. The District employs a two-pronged approach to mosquito control: it conducts year-round monitoring and treatment of aquatic immature mosquito stages in breeding habitats to prevent development into flying and biting adults, and it performs nightly surveillance of adult mosquito activity from May through October, initiating control operations when surveillance thresholds are exceeded or when mosquito-borne disease threats emerge. This proactive strategy has proven essential to maintaining a comfortable outdoor environment for Lee County residents while reducing the public health risks associated with historical and emerging disease vectors, including Zika and chikungunya.
