One cant really appreciate Kirkintilloch without knowing the historical significance of this place. The earliest settlement in what seems to now be Kirkintilloch was a Roman fort. This fort would later be of importance to the Scottish in their fight for independence. The history of Kirkintilloch dates back to the mid-2nd century, where the Antonine Wall was routed through the small town (although it wasnt until 1211 when a small settlement grew there). On the wall was a former roman settlement hence the word fort. It wasnt until the late 1700s that the town began to develop, when it was now known as the hotbed of industrial revolution in Scotland. Gradually, Kirkintilloch of Scotland became one of the largest textiles producing industries in Scotland. Further development came to Kirkintilloch with the construction of Forth and Clyde canal through the center of the town in 1773 and also Railway in 1826 making the small town an inland as well as a transport hub. Notable mention of this producers includes J & J Hay and Peter McGregor and the Lion. The most famous exported merchandise in Kirkintilloch were the distinctive red British phonebox and postbox. 21st century was also not left behind as it saw a revolution in the redevelopment of industrial sites and the canal. In order to curb the strength of local temperance movement, Kirkintilloch was prohibited from alcohol for most of the 1900s. It wasnt until the 1970s before the drinking prohibition was voted down. This canal was opened in 1790 and runs from river Carron to river Clyde. Kirkintilloch Town Hall, though it has been closed for 14 years but is said to have some historic interest.
